There’s more involved in revitalizing Corpus Christi than meets the eye, and that includes it’s music scene. Corpus Christi Songwriters joins us on Coastal Living to talk about what they’re doing to help.
“The idea behind C.C. Songwriters is to foster original talent in Corpus Christi.” Wieland says, “We are building a community and making Corpus Christi a place where singer songwriters want to join us.”
This much I know will happen: Those who attend the festival will be astonished at the depth and breadth of musical talent and clever lyricism of people who call Corpus Christi home.
CC Songwriters is an association that encourages and promotes original music. I alone can account for 17 songs written in the past three years that I may never have written had CC Songwriters not existed.
The encouragement to write those songs was subtle. CC Songwriters hosts an open-mic night on the second Sunday of each month. I had accumulated maybe a dozen songs my whole life before I discovered this event. Its mere existence prompted me to write new songs, to have something new to share and not be redundant.
A way to celebrate original music in South Texas and a venue to inspire other artists to keep creating. That’s the purpose of the Corpus Christi Songwriters Festival.
Artists helping artists affected by Hurricane Harvey is the purpose of this month’s In the Rounds local talent showcase. In the Rounds is a monthly event put on by Corpus Christi Songwriters, an association that promotes and fosters original music in the Coastal Bend, at the Executive Surf Club. On Sunday, proceeds from the show will benefit the Rockport Center for the Arts, said Corpus Christi Songwriters vice president and founder Jimmy Willden.
“We’re continuing to expand what we do and the resources we provide for the artist community,” said Corpus Christi Songwriters President Steven Hansen. “We want to honor the people who are creating in Corpus Christi.”

“For songwriters, inspiration can strike at any time. Regardless of the surroundings, the lyrics, chords and melodies of a potential smash can come together for a composer so unexpectedly that scribbling the ideas down on paper as soon as possible is of the utmost importance. But no matter how fledgling songwriters get inspired and capture and preserve their ideas, they all share the desire to have their songs heard once they are written. Fortunately for songwriters of all skill levels, Corpus Christi’s emerging venue for live music, the Churchyard, offers a valuable chance to be heard with its upcoming Corpus Christi Songwriters Showcase.”

“Corpus Christi Songwriters “In The Rounds” is hosted in the middle bar sections of House of Rock that features a smaller stage more suited to acoustic performances. The atmosphere is considerably more intimate which allows the music to be the main attraction. The proceedings are hosted by local musician Jimmy Willden, who knows a thing or two about writing a great song, and he often takes the opportunity to debut some of his newest songs. So for those aspiring composers who have been sitting on a backlog of original songs but have not found a way to perform them in front of a live audience, House of Rock’s Corpus Christi Songwriters is a great way for local talent to hone their craft, one strum at a time.
